South Pasadena High School (SPHS) has announced the grand opening of its newly reimagined library space, now known as the Tiger Den. Designed to be bright, welcoming, and adaptable, the Tiger Den represents a significant step in SPHS’s commitment to fostering academic growth, student wellness, and a sense of community.

Located within the SPHS library, the Tiger Den transforms a previously underused area into a vibrant, modular space equipped with cozy study nooks and comfortable seating. The flexible design supports a variety of uses—independent study, group collaboration, presentations, and screen-free relaxation. It will also serve as a venue for teacher-led instruction, student showcases, and wellness breaks.
Inclusivity was central to the space’s design, with the goal of making all students feel supported and welcome. The Tiger Den complements the school’s Wellness Center, which opened in 2023, and reinforces SPHS’s ongoing efforts to create a nurturing, engaging campus environment. These efforts appear to be yielding results: According to the latest California Healthy Kids Survey, 71% of SPHS students report feeling connected to their school—a 15% increase since 2018.
“Innovation from the high school team and generous donations from donors such as SPEF and anonymous community members have coalesced to create a space that will further belonging and connectedness between the students and their school, which is impressive,” said Superintendent Angela Elizondo Baxter.
The Tiger Den will officially open its doors with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 11, 2025, at 2:00 pm. The event will take place at the SPHS Library, located at 1401 Fremont Avenue. The community is invited to attend and see firsthand how this dynamic space will benefit current and future Tigers.
