South Pasadena High School’s Speech and Debate team delivered an outstanding performance at the California High School Speech Association’s State Tournament, held from May 2-4, 2025, at Culver City High School.

The tournament saw fierce competition from 175 schools across the state, showcasing the best and brightest debaters and speakers in California.
Among the SPHS competitors, Samuel Whitman participated in the Congressional Debate event, while the team also sent two pairs of talented Parliamentary Debaters: Elisa Argus and Kasra Ghaffari, and Paige Tang and Emilio Lois.
After three intense days of rigorous debate and public speaking, the highlight of the weekend came when Paige Tang and Emilio Lois clinched the top prize, finishing in first place and earning the prestigious title of State Champions in Parliamentary Debate.
“This victory is a testament to the dedication, skill, and hard work of our students,” said Christopher Herrin, the Speech & Debate coach at South Pasadena High School. “I am incredibly proud of our team for their impressive performances and for representing our school with such poise and intelligence.”
In addition to Paige and Emilio’s win, the entire team’s efforts contributed to a successful showing at the tournament, with all state qualifiers representing South Pasadena with distinction.
