Celebrating Community and Heritage
The Council made two proclamations during Wednesday’s meeting. First, it recognized May 4–10 as “Municipal Clerks Week,” honoring the contributions of the City Clerk and the entire Clerk’s Office. Second, the Council proclaimed May as “Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month,” celebrating the vibrant and diverse AAPI community in South Pasadena.
Tree Removal Services
The Council approved an amendment to the municipal code concerning tree and shrub removal. The change is intended to streamline the permitting process for removing dead or dying trees by granting the Director of Public Works “clear authority to approve and issue the permits” (Council Meeting Agenda).
This amendment will apply to permits issued on or after April 1, 2025, and is aimed at enhancing public safety by facilitating the timely removal of hazardous trees. A comprehensive ordinance related to tree removal is expected to be introduced in June.
Preparing for Global Events
In preparation for the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Council discussed a potential partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to install a Throne Labs restroom facility. The effort aligns with Metro’s broader plans to upgrade public infrastructure and amenities.
The next South Pasadena City Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21.
