In the City of Roses
the homed
and the homeless
their bones curl
in the same
sleeping positions
under a black skywaking
in a new year
on Colorado Blvd.
with Monarch butterflies
made of roses
Teresa Mei Chuc was born in Vietnam but grew up in Pasadena. Teresa says: “On the eve of the new year, my family and I would walk up the street with folding chairs and blankets to find a spot to camp for the night. We would be excited for morning and watched the new year emerge with floats and marching bands. When I was too small to see over the crowd, I remember sitting on shoulders which at the time seemed to me like I was floating above the world.”

Laura Williams

Cocoa rose for New Years. Photo and haiga poem by Laura Williams. (In ancient Japan, haiga combined brushwork with poems. Modern haiga can combine digital images with lyrical poetry, creating new art and meaning).
Laura Williams grew up in Eagle Rock, CA where watching the Pasadena Rose Parade has been a lifelong new year’s tradition. She has always enjoyed writing, but lately her focus is on short forms of poetry such as haiku and tanka. She currently lives in Santa Clarita, CA.
We welcome and encourage your response especially in the form of short poems. You may reply by leaving a comment below. The Poetry Corner is hosted by Kathabela Wilson.
