Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued a statement Monday following the release of SEIU President David Huerta from federal custody. Huerta was detained during an immigration protest, which Pérez described as a consequence of the Trump administration’s “targeted and aggressive action against our immigrant communities.”

According to the senator, Huerta was legally exercising his constitutional right to protest when he was injured, arrested, and held for several days. “David’s release from custody today does not reduce the harm he suffered,” she stated. “The rule of law, including due process for members of the immigrant community, must be restored.”
Pérez emphasized the importance of continued peaceful protest and legislative action in the face of what she described as unjust immigration enforcement tactics. “At this critical moment in our nation, we must continue peacefully protesting against injustice,” she said.
She reaffirmed her office’s commitment to providing “Know Your Rights” resources to constituents and advancing legislative efforts like SB 98, the SAFE Act, aimed at protecting immigrant communities.
Senator Pérez represents California’s 25th Senate District, which includes parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties, and serves as Chair of the Senate Education Committee and a member of the Senate Budget Committee.
