Carver and Valentine Elementary Schools, part of the San Marino Unified School District (SMUSD), have been honored with the prestigious Platinum Award for their implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), one of the highest levels of recognition in California.

PBIS is a nationally recognized framework designed to promote student success by supporting behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental well-being. The Platinum Award is reserved for schools that not only implement the framework with fidelity, but also demonstrate sustained success through data-driven outcomes and a commitment to cultivating a positive school culture.
“We are thrilled that the state has recognized both of our elementary schools for their PBIS frameworks and outstanding implementation,” said Dr. Lena Richter, SMUSD’s Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. “Putting these programs in place has truly been a group effort by every teacher and staff member on campus.”
More than 3,000 schools across California participate in PBIS initiatives, but only a select few earn Platinum-level distinction. This recognition affirms that Carver and Valentine have created environments where students feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow.
According to Superintendent Dr. Linda de la Torre, the success of the programs lies in the unwavering dedication of the school teams. “Carver and Valentine have demonstrated exceptional teamwork through educational strategies that lead to student success,” she said. “Each school has developed its own motto to guide behavior, displayed visual reminders around campus, hosted PBIS assemblies, and recognized students to reinforce positive behavior.”
