This November, the City of San Gabriel is bringing together two meaningful celebrations for a unique community event, blending the heartfelt traditions of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with the poignant observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
By Rena Kurlander
The event, taking place on Friday, November 7, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, promises an unforgettable evening of remembrance, strength, and cultural unity.
The celebration will feature vibrant live music performances, arts and crafts, face painting, and community altars, including a special Cancer Awareness Altar honoring those affected by breast cancer. These altars will serve as powerful spaces to remember loved ones who have passed and celebrate survivors who continue to inspire. A unique addition this year is a Pet Altar, acknowledging the special bonds we share with our furry companions.
A Special Cancer Awareness Altar: Honoring Loved Ones and Survivors
The Cancer Awareness Altar will be a central feature of the evening, dedicated to those who have fought breast cancer and celebrating the strength of survivors. Attendees are invited to contribute photos of their own loved ones by submitting them online at SanGabrielCity.com/DiaDeLosMuertos or by dropping them off at the Community Recreation Center. Photos can be submitted until October 30, and the displayed images will serve as a heartfelt tribute to the ongoing fight against cancer.
Drone Show to Close the Evening with a Magical Display of Unity
As the night concludes, the event will reach new heights with a spectacular, one-time-only drone show lighting up the sky. This breathtaking visual experience will mark a special moment of unity and celebration, an opportunity for the community to come together and honor life, love, and the enduring strength of those who inspire us every day.
A Family-Friendly, Free Community Celebration
This free event offers something for everyone—live performances, interactive arts and crafts, and more. Residents are encouraged to bring their families and friends to experience the joy, culture, and healing power of this unique celebration.
