The City of San Gabriel held their regular City Council meeting on April 7, 2020, the first since the election on March 3.
By Cheryl Cabot
The meeting was held via phone conference due to the Coronavirus.
The oath of office was administered to new Councilman Tony Ding and incumbent Councilman John Harrington. Mayor Jason Pu announced that certificates would be presented at a later City Council meeting when it is safe for family, friends and supporters to attend.
Following the induction of the new City Council members, in accordance with State law, “the City Council is required to reorganize after the holding of an election by selection of Mayor and Vice Mayor.” Vice Mayor Denise Menchaca was elected as the City’s first Latina Mayor and Chin Ho Liao was elected as Vice Mayor.
Mayor Menchaca said:
I am deeply grateful to my colleagues on the City Council for giving me the opportunity to serve as Mayor as we continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
Prior to the adjournment of the meeting, former City Councilmember Juli Costanza thanked the Councilmembers, her family and the citizens of San Gabriel for supporting her during her seventeen-year tenure.

So very sad to see Julie Costanza leave the San Gabriel City Council – she will be missed by the citizens of San Gabriel for all her great work thru the years and we wish her the best!
Congratulations to Councilmember Tony Ding
