        San Gabriel Celebrates Lunar New Year With Two Days of Lanterns, Food, and Entertainment

      Join the fun this weekend in the San Gabriel’s Mission District to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

      The free, two-day-long Lunar Lantern Festival extravaganza will be held on Saturday, February 17, from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday, February 18, from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The festival and will offer a variety of entertainment, interactive activities, and delicious food for all ages.

      The festival will kick off on Saturday with a lion and dragon dance at 9:45 am and will continue throughout the weekend with a lineup of music and dance performances. Attendees can enjoy traditional Chinese folk dance, hip-hop dancing, singing, and children’s performances.

      What to expect

      Attendees can marvel at illuminated lantern displays, including a lantern house filled with giant inflatable lanterns shaped like Chinese zodiac animals. Kids can receive free lanterns (while supplies last) and enjoy many engaging activities, including carnival rides and games, a petting zoo, bounce houses, chalk art and pony rides.

      Food enthusiasts can indulge in culinary Asian delights such as crepes, roasted chestnuts, popcorn chicken, noodles, barbecue meats, seafood skewers and irresistible desserts, all available for purchase from the hundreds of culinary and artisan market vendors that will be participating in the event.

      Attendees can take part in a complimentary walking tour and learn about the rich history of the Mission District.

      San Gabriel’s Mission District is already adorned with lanterns, symbolizing a fresh start to the new year. The festival will mark the first full moon of the lunar year and will also celebrate the beginning of spring.

      Parking will be available at the following locations:

      • Park & Ride lot (257 South Mission Drive)
      • San Gabriel High School (801 South Ramona Street)
      • AHMC San Gabriel Valley Medical Center (438 West Las Tunas Drive)

      Mission Drive will be closed to traffic between Broadway and Santa Anita Street from Friday, February 16 at 10:00 pm until Sunday, February 18 at 11:00 pm.
