The Rose Bowl will forgo its annual Fourth of July fireworks display this year, opting instead for a high-tech drone show to celebrate the holiday.

The City of Pasadena confirmed the change, though no specific reason for the decision has been provided. However, recent concerns raised by local residents shed light on the potential safety issues associated with traditional fireworks displays. In particular, Victor Caballero, who attended a soccer game at the Rose Bowl on July 4, 2024, highlighted the dangers posed by illegal fireworks in the area. Despite Pasadena’s zero-tolerance policy for fireworks, Caballero described how fireworks were being set off in the parking areas, in front of police and security, and even inside the stadium stands. He criticized the lack of enforcement, emphasizing how this made the event unsafe and unpleasant for attendees.
This troubling experience may be one of the reasons for the Rose Bowl’s decision to replace fireworks with a modern drone light show this year. The drone display promises to provide a safer, more controlled alternative to the traditional fireworks while still offering a spectacular visual experience.
In addition to the drone show, the Rose Bowl will host the popular FoodieLand Food Festival over the Fourth of July weekend, featuring over 200 food vendors. This culinary event is expected to draw large crowds, offering a unique mix of dining and entertainment alongside the new drone celebration.
