David Huerta, who was on the scene to observe and document the law enforcement activity, was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during the raid, which targeted immigrant workers in the area. His arrest has sparked outrage among community leaders, labor activists, and advocates for immigrant rights.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Rep. Chu, who represents California’s 27th Congressional District, condemned the raid and Huerta’s arrest, calling the actions of ICE both “unlawful and cruel.” She stated, “I am outraged at the ICE raids in downtown Los Angeles that not only targeted immigrant workers and spread fear throughout our community, but also attempted to silence those who dare to speak out against the T. Administration’s cruel and unlawful immigration agenda.”
Chu further emphasized that Huerta was simply exercising his constitutional right to observe law enforcement activity and peacefully protest against the raids. “It is clear that SEIU President David Huerta was exercising his right to observe law enforcement activity and stand with the community in peaceful protest to these raids,” she said. “I stand with David and with immigrant communities across this country, and demand his immediate release along with the release of those detained in the raids.”
The arrest of Huerta has fueled broader concerns about the treatment of immigrant communities under the T. Administration’s aggressive immigration policies, which have faced widespread criticism for their impact on families and neighborhoods across the nation. Chu’s statement further highlighted the need for reforms to protect immigrants’ rights, emphasizing that “Immigrants strengthen our nation and every person in this country has a right to due process.”
Rep. Chu concluded her statement with a call for urgent action: “We need answers. We need accountability. And we need to put an end to Donald T.’s inhumane and disgusting attacks on immigrant communities.”
The incident continues to raise questions about the growing tension between law enforcement and communities affected by immigration enforcement, with many activists calling for increased oversight and reforms to ICE’s operations.
As of now, Huerta’s supporters are demanding his immediate release, along with the release of those detained during the controversial raid. The situation remains ongoing, and advocates are closely monitoring developments.
