Michael Lynn
earth brings warmth
sunlight returned
life breaks through
warmth is life
the earth in my hands
Michael Lynn is professor of recorder and baroque flute at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He compares the lyricism of tanka poetry to improvisation on flute.

spring sun
following the curves
in the spiral
All photos and this haiku are by Tom Clausen. He says of his Reflections photo, “I turned this photo sideways just for the interesting effect… I liked it whichever way it was viewed, but this way made me happiest”. Tom, a longtime librarian at Cornell University’s Mann Library in Ithaca NY, walks in wild places like Sapsucker Woods, and has twice ridden his bike to Guatamala.

Mel Weisburd
I want to go to the next world
with the tastes on my breath and
reflux and the odors in my nose
of immemorial tastes:
mint, garlic, onion, chili, jalapeno,
horseradish, cumin, curry, radish,
fennel, ginger — anything unforgettable
except salt and sugar so that I can
pass thinly through the eye of the needle,
the most divine tastes in all of the universe
from our mother earth, Queen of the Cosmos
Mel Weisburd (1927 — 2015) lives in the hearts and minds of poets as a father of contemporary poetry in Los Angeles and a caring environmentalist with vision and wisdom toward the future of poetry and humanity.

to raise tomatoes
hot peppers
but without the sun’s heat
what good is the rich ground
