GUEST OPINION
I can’t be jubilant about the number of people that paraded in Pasadena this past weekend shouting “lock him up” ” F*** T.” etc. The anger was an electric current. Many of the posters were quite clever and gave me a laugh. God knows I am worried about the fate of our nation, and I need a laugh, but…

We have to recognize that T. and his hack protégés are responding opportunistically to the genuine concerns of American people. The Democratic Party has, by its failure to articulate and implement serious policies, gotten us into this fix. With the exception of its valiant progressive wing, the Democratic Party is passive on issues like the voracious “defense” budget that sucks the life out of worthy budget items, the endless wars and war profiteering by contractors while maimed and drugged veterans fill homeless encampments, the drug catastrophe that is destroying youth, the failure of the public K-12 education system to create a level playing field, the prohibitive cost of college and graduate level education, the lack of an industrial policy, the lack of an innovation strategy, the lack of a strategy to address the coming climate disaster that includes just transition measures for labor, the undeniable technology ascendency of China, the burdensome taxation of the middle class, the Sisyphean struggle of feminism, the failure to set reasonable boundaries on immigration and give security to those who are here, the need to repeal Citizens United, and last but not least the sheer gutless immorality of our complicity with Israel in Gaza and the West Bank.
The Democrats Fail to Lead
The Democrats have been too busy in Capitol-adjacent fundraising offices to address policy. Instead of policy, they have insipid slogans like “better together.” We are underestimating American people. You can call the Trumpers ignorant, but if we think they are stupid, we are the stupid ones.
And the Democratic Party does a terrible job, or really no job at all, of succession strategy. Who are the leaders? Empty suits like Cory Booker? No. It’s hard to be a leader when handlers and fundraisers require your total commitment.
We Democrats must have policies that addresses the problems our country faces. No amount of ranting can substitute for that.
