Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born missionary and former head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops, has been elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, taking the name Leo XIV. He becomes the first Augustinian and only the second Pope from the Americas, following his predecessor, Pope Francis.

The announcement was met with praise from civic and religious leaders worldwide. Los Angeles County Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis issued a public statement recognizing the historic significance of the election.
“Today’s announcement of Pope Leo XIV marks a significant moment not only for the Church but for the world,” Solis stated. “Born in Chicago and having served for over two decades in Peru, where he became a bishop and later a naturalized citizen, Pope Leo brings with him a unique blend of cultural insight and pastoral experience.”
Cardinal Prevost’s long missionary tenure in Peru and his leadership as head of the Order of Saint Augustine have defined a papal profile marked by humility, advocacy for the marginalized, and global sensitivity. Supervisor Solis added, “As Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, he demonstrated a strong commitment to the poor and migrants, and a consistent effort to engage with people across different walks of life.”
Born on September 14, 1955, to Louis Marius Prevost and Mildred Martínez, Pope Leo XIV grew up in Chicago alongside his two brothers, Louis Martín and John Joseph. With a background enriched by French, Italian, and Spanish heritage, he brings a multicultural perspective to his papacy.
As he assumes the responsibilities of Bishop of Rome, observers anticipate a continuation of his pastoral approach, shaped by decades of service and his deep roots in both North and South America.
