      POETS SALON

a man throwing kisses with a rose in his hand

      Drawing by Kath Abela Wilson

      – 02/24/21

      Hosted by Kath Abela Wilson

      a red star
      underfoot
      and night
      so soon to fall
      a little longer love

      he wove a ring
      of white clover to begin
      to save the time
      and in deep space
      a deep sweetness

      ~ Kath Abela

      first date…
      I know I’m in love
      when I discover
      I’ve never even touched
      my jelly donut

      That Magic Moment

Last night, I picked up a pencil and a sheet of paper, thought for a minute, about the donut, the coffee shop counter where I sat swiveled to my right staring, lovestruck, into the eyes of this young woman. My heart so full of butterflies I cannot even think of eating. I put the pencil and paper back down without drawing a line, knowing I could never capture the thrill of that moment in black and white.

      she was married
      but she leaves her husband
      to marry me…
      seven years later
      she leaves me too

      Valentine’s Day 2021

      The sky is layered
      Like a delicate parfait
      Colors blend subtly
      The palette is perfect
      All senses are satisfied
      I gratefully accept
      Nature’s Valentine’s gift

      Ο

      the taste of cheesecake
      blossoms in my mouth
      your so face near

      Ο

      wind howling around corners
      exploding into
      my thought of you

      Ο

      sound of our boots
      crunching desert sand
      prickly pear blooms

      Ο

      old scraggly tree
      waiting patiently
      your beloved shadow

      Ο

      earth and sky
      sudden colors
      my love alive

I Know I’m in Love: Quotes and Credits

Michael H. Lester is sequestered in his home in Los Angeles during the pandemic where he has made his backyard a paradise for the local birds. You can usually find him peeking out the kitchen window in hopes of seeing the Black Phoebe, the dark-eyed junco, the Cooper’s hawk, or the yellow-rumped warbler.

Pamela Shea is an L.A. native who was the Poet Laureate of Sunland-Tujunga from 2017-2020. She finds inspiration in nature and can be found scaling local mountains or traipsing through washes.

Alice Pero is a poet, flutist and former dancer who became Sunland/Tujunga’s 10th Poet Laureate in 2020. Her book of poetry,“Thawed Stars,” was praised by Kenneth Koch as having “clarity and surprises.” Pero created the reading series Moonday in Los Angeles, in 2002. A classically trained flutist, she formed Windsong Players Chamber Ensemble in 2015. which performs regularly around the Los Angeles area.
