Jacaranda painting by Jackie Chou

Jacaranda
All my life, I have coped with negative emotions through creativity. I wrote poems and made collages through my parents’ deaths and my own personal struggles. Now, in difficult times, I find solace in a painting I did of a jacaranda tree. I look at its trunk for strength and its lavender flowers for hope.

with steady strokes

green
of leaves
pink
of buds…
love of each as equalsour lives
intermingle
whether in rain or shine…
he said “patience”
as if one, we listenedthe world yet can hope…
spinning a prayer wheel
designs our faith
in an unexpected gift
of melodic mantra songsmy mom’s rose bush
still blooms fairy pink…
i can hear her words
“where there’s life
there’s hope”fulfilling a dream
her dowry boxed in
a hope chest
with all the hopes and dreams
of a new norm
