The Pacific Wheel
We drove upon a fat ribbon of concrete in the dark
(tombstone sparkles)
until we arrived at the edge of the city where
land meets water meets air.Electric, kaleidoscope, neon rainbow.
Red shoes, frills, metallic balls.
Fried dough, sugar, cinnamon.Hopping over gouged wood she boarded the steel bucket
with me
and we ascended the mechanical ladder
over the crying, shouting, laughing
mass of people.Rolling in slow-motion honey
we stopped at the top
gently rocking, rocking, rocking. Our knees lightly touching
she said, “If you look in different directions it’s like being in two opposite worlds!”We slept through several lifetimes up there, hanging over Los Angeles.
Angels, space aliens, lovers in a parallel universe,
and when we landed back on Earth we were angry at being mortal again. We drove home in silence.
Each of us lost in our thoughts
each of us a stranger, still, to the other. But, only in this world, not in the others.
