A pilot bus service is scheduled to start connecting the Metro Gold Line (at Memorial Park Station) with the Sam Merrill Trailhead in Altadena, on April 7, 2018.

The pilot program will run on Saturdays and Sundays until September 30th. Travel time to the trailhead will be 23 minutes, and buses will leave every half hour from the northbound Raymond and Holly bus stop in Pasadena.
Altadena residents
The news of the new service was met with mixed feelings from many Altadena residents. Some took to social media to raise concerns about the “easy access” to Altadena, as one resident said on the micro social network, Nextdoor. Others welcomed the news with excitement and open arms. Altadena resident Bjorn Reddington was excited to see the program enacted as he doesn’t drive. “It’s an added benefit to the community with a direct connector between Altadena and Pasadena,” he said, as he waited for his girlfriend to pick him up from the Memorial Park Gold Line station in Pasadena.
The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisor Kathryn Barger to partner with the City of Pasadena, the Trust for Public Land, Edison International and the Wilderness Society to implement the six-month pilot bus service in the unincorporated Altadena area.
Route 88 is free opening weekend
The new route, Pasadena Transit Route 88, will use clean fuel Compressed Natural Gas buses, and will serve stops between 7:05 a.m. to 4:35 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The last bus will depart from the Altadena Trailhead at 5 p.m. (click for a route schedule). Rides on Route 88 will be free opening weekend, April 7 and 8, to celebrate the launch.
Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek and Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger are slated to launch the new route this coming Saturday, April 7, 2018, at 9:00 a.m. at Memorial Park in Pasadena.
