California State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued a sharp rebuke today following what she described as “abusive treatment” of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-California) by federal Homeland Security agents.

In a statement released by her office, Senator Pérez expressed outrage over an incident in which Senator Padilla was allegedly forcibly removed from a room, pushed to the ground, and handcuffed after identifying himself. The agents involved reportedly operated under the direction of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
“I am shocked by the abusive treatment imposed on democratically-elected U.S. Senator Alex Padilla,” Pérez said. “This is completely unacceptable and should never happen. But it’s part of an ever-escalating power grab by an authoritarian federal administration that illegally uses military force to engage in battle with everyday Californians for exercising their constitutional rights.”
The details surrounding the incident remain limited, but the allegations have sparked immediate concern among California lawmakers. Senator Pérez linked the reported actions to broader federal overreach and pledged continued support for immigrant and vulnerable communities through legislative action.
“My office will continue to provide ‘Know Your Rights’ information to constituents and advance legislation like SB 98, the SAFE Act, which will protect our vulnerable and cherished immigrant communities in educational settings,” she stated.
Senator Pérez currently serves as Chair of the Senate Education Committee and is a member of the Senate Budget Committee, including its Subcommittee on Education. She represents California’s 25th Senate District, covering a wide region that includes Pasadena, Glendale, Claremont, Monterey Park, and Rancho Cucamonga.
No official response has yet been issued by Homeland Security or Secretary Noem regarding the allegations.
