Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) kicked off the 2025–2026 academic year with its annual all-staff welcome back event, “Launch Into Wellness: The Power of PUSD – Rising Together,” held at Pasadena High School.

      By News Desk

The gathering united educators, staff, and special guests to celebrate perseverance, healing, and a renewed commitment to student success in the wake of the devastating Eaton Fire.

The day began with heartfelt remarks from Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Blanco, stirring student performances, and a keynote address by author and international speaker Merlyna Valentine. Valentine’s story of resilience set the tone for a day centered on connection, growth, and wellness.

      Professional Development with Purpose

For the first time, all certificated and classified employees participated in a district-wide professional development experience focused on academic excellence and wellness. Workshops covered literacy, math, college and career readiness, and strategies for fostering inclusive, supportive learning environments. Staff also explored evidence-based approaches to enhance student resilience and educator well-being.

      Honoring Heroes and Changemakers

The event included a moving ceremony to recognize outstanding employees and community partners whose leadership and compassion stood out during and after the Eaton Fire:

      • PEF (Pasadena Educational Foundation) was honored for raising over $1.5 million in direct relief for affected families and continuing to fund innovative programs across the district.
      • PUSD Communications Team, led by Hilda Ramirez Horvath, received accolades for their crisis response and compassionate community engagement.
      • Dr. Gomez was celebrated for hosting the Community Connector event at PCC just 10 days after the fire, offering a space for healing and unity.
      • Janet Kitani, Office Manager at Hamilton Elementary, was recognized for her exceptional service and dedication.
      • Principal Maricela Brambila of Willard Elementary was honored for visionary leadership and impact on student success.
      • Martin Dorado, teacher at Madison Elementary, was celebrated for creativity and commitment to student growth.

      Introducing the Hero Award

A new Hero Award was introduced to honor individuals whose courage and coordination were pivotal during the Eaton Fire:

      • Miguel Márquez, Pasadena City Manager
      • Chad Augustin, Pasadena Fire Chief
      • Gene Harris, Pasadena Police Chief
      • Jabari Williams, Former Altadena Sheriff Commander
      • Brent Bartlett, Sierra Madre Fire Chief
      • Mike Dunning, Director of PUSD Facilities, Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation

      Voices of Leadership

“This year’s launch is about more than returning to school,” said Dr. Blanco. “It was about restoring connection, community, and commitment. After the challenges of the Eaton Fire, we are deeply grateful to every employee who shows up every day with heart and purpose. Together, we are rising stronger.”

Board President Jennifer Hall Lee added, “It was energizing to witness our employees come together with such hope and determination. This event reaffirmed what we already know. The power of PUSD rests in the talent, skills, and hearts of everyone in our community.”
