The Pasadena Unified Board of Education has placed two measures on the November 5, 2024 ballot, the Measure R facilities bond and the Measure EE parcel tax.
By Rena Kurlander
Measure R:
The facilities measure requires the approval of 55% of district voters and would raise $900 million from property owners, with the amount paid by each owner based on the assessed value of the owner’s properties. The facilities bond proceeds can only be used on buildings and facilities projects.
Measure EE:
The parcel tax requires the approval of two-thirds of district voters and would raise $5 million per year for eight years with property owners paying $90 a year for each owned parcel of land. The Measure EE funds can be used for any general fund purpose, employee salaries, benefits, and services.
History of district measures
The district has never before placed both kinds of measures on the ballot at the same time. District voters have passed three PUSD facilities bond measures before: Measure Y for $240 million in 1997, Measure TT for $350 million in 2008, and Measure O for $516 million in 2020. Measure CC, a parcel tax measure, was placed on a mail-only ballot in 2010 and it did not succeed.
