The event will take place on Thursday January 30 at 6:00 pm in front of Pasadena City Hall and will bring together local leaders, activists, and community members in support of the city’s ambitious goal to achieve carbon-free electric power within five years.
As climate change continues to impact communities worldwide, Pasadena’s ongoing efforts to address the crisis will take center stage during the vigil. A crowd dressed in green and black will gather with electric candles, setting the tone for an evening of solidarity and action. The event will feature a live performance of “Reach Out and Touch” by the Towne Singers, followed by a series of impactful speeches.
The evening’s program will include an invocation by Rev. Dr. Larry E. Campbell, Pastor of First AME Church in Pasadena, who will open the ceremony. Pasadena City Councilmember Jason Lyon will share the history behind the passage of Resolution 9977, while 16-year-old Audrey Ma, a student at Polytechnic School, will deliver the keynote address, highlighting the role of young people in shaping the future of climate policy.
Local amateur climatologist and meteorologist Edgar McGregor will provide insight into the link between extreme weather events and climate change, and 2025 Rose Queen Lindsay Charles will discuss the “Power of Community” in confronting climate challenges. The event will be attended by a diverse mix of supporters, from high school students and seniors wearing green armbands to political leaders and representatives from over 20 local organizations.
Among the groups present will be the Audubon Society, League of Women Voters, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, each bringing their own unique message of advocacy and support for a sustainable future. Attendees will carry banners and posters displaying the slogan “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” underscoring the pressing need for action in the fight against climate change.
The evening will culminate with a call to action from Rev. Dr. Tera Landers, pastor of the Throop Unitarian Church in Pasadena, urging all present to continue their efforts in making Pasadena’s ambitious climate goals a reality.
As the vigil draws attention to Pasadena’s climate leadership, the city remains at the forefront of progressive environmental policy, with the goal of transitioning to carbon-free electricity within five years—a bold commitment that aligns with broader efforts to combat climate change across the globe.
