The Pasadena rent control and eviction protections campaign announces that it has received a $3000 grant from the civil rights law firm of Gronemeier & Hickambottom.

The donation will go to support the campaign for rent control and just cause eviction protections in Pasadena. The campaign is currently canvassing the city’s voters for signatures in order to qualify for the November 2022 ballot.
Tenants make up 62% of the households in Pasadena and rents have been rising out of control for decades. Between 2012 and 2018 rents in Pasadena increased by 32% while the Consumer Price Index (the measure of the increase or decrease in the overall cost of goods and services) rose by only 12.4%. This is effectively a 17.5% increase in rent over 6 years. The recent economic crisis has only made this situation worse. Zillow reported in July that rents in the Los Angeles region have risen 9.2% over last year. These rising rents are not sustainable in Pasadena, especially in the face of stagnant wages.
A press release received by our newsroom stated the following:
The failure to protect the rights of tenants from skyrocketing rents and unjust evictions has had devastating impacts on the 70% of the city’s African American households and the 68% of the city’s Latino households who are renters. Too many of our Black and Brown neighbors have been permanently displaced from Pasadena, a community where their families have lived for generations. Rent control and eviction protections will safeguard and enhance Pasadena’s rich racial and ethnic diversity.
A survey conducted in 2019 by David Binder Research found that 69% of voters favor a rent control in Pasadena and 82% favor just cause eviction protections. The survey showed that a majority of Pasadena voters in all seven council districts favor rent control and eviction protections.
A press conference will be held on the west steps of Pasadena City Hall on Tuesday, October 12, at 2:30 pm to formally announce and award the grants. Attorney Elbie Hickambottom, Jr. will be presenting the grants.
