A proposal currently before the Pasadena City Council would make serious changes to both the South Lake Business District’s on-street parking meters and in Shopper’s Lane.
By Briony James
The proposal for Shopper’s Lane and its parking lots would eliminate the 90-minute free period, and double the daily rate from $6.00 to $12.00. While hourly parking would remain at $2.00 an hour, the new proposal would allow for 24-hr paid parking rather than the current times of 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. These changes would apply to both on-street meters and the large Shopper’s Lane parking lots.
The South Lake Parking Place Commission (SLPPC), which is responsible for operating, managing, and controlling the parking places within the district, has also suggested changing the rates on South Lake Avenue, tripling the rate from $1.00 an hour to $3.00 an hour, with a 1 hour minimum and a 2 hour maximum. The rates would be in force from 9:00 am to midnight daily, instead of the current 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

I have no intention to pay those rates. Businesses will suffer. I am surprised i am not hearing an uproar from the retailers.
