Pasadena City College (16-2) defeated Golden West (18-10) in a close matchup 3-1 this past Wednesday night. Strong pitching and defense from the Lancers propelled them to their 16th victory of the season.

      By Daniel Peters

Both sides started the game slow with three combined hits throughout the first three innings, with Pasadena pitcher Jameson Ferraro quieting SoCal’s seventh-ranked program with four strikeouts.

Pasadena finally got on the board in the fourth inning with an Ivan Barragan sacrifice fly and Jack Esguerra double that pushed their lead to 2-0.

Golden West responded in the sixth inning cutting Pasadena’s lead down to one. However, the Lancers quickly retook their two-run lead thanks to an Evan Nahra single to center field. These would be the final runs for either side.

The remainder of the game was dominated by pitching and defense, with Connor Campbell relieving Ferraro in the seventh and picking up his second save of the season.

The offense played as a collective unit, with Jack Esguerra and Mark Manuel leading the team with two hits a piece. Esguerra tallied on to his team-leading 24 RBIs and team-leading 44 hits, tied with fellow teammate Adrian Roman.

Ferraro and Campbell pitched phenomenally together to secure the victory. Ferraro went six innings, striking out seven, and only allowed one run. Campbell pitched three no-hit innings with three strikeouts.

The Lancers now prepare to face East Los Angeles College next Tuesday after Saturday’s game against Palomar was postponed.
