John Muir High School in Altadena will host a special screening of the short educational film Owen Brown’s Body on Friday, March 7, 2025.

The event, organized by the Owen Brown Gravesite Committee, offers an opportunity to learn about Owen Brown, the son of renowned abolitionist John Brown, and a key figure in the history of the Altadena area.
Doors open at 6:00 pm, with the screening beginning at 7:00 pm. Admission is free, and tickets are available online through Eventbrite. The film, created by Pablo Miralles, focuses on Owen Brown’s significant contributions, including his involvement in Bleeding Kansas, the Raid on Harpers Ferry, and his life as a homesteader in 19th-century Altadena. The short film is geared toward students in grades 6-12 but promises to be of interest to all community members.
In addition to the film, the evening will serve as a fundraiser for those affected by the recent Eaton Fire, which devastated the homes of numerous John Muir alumni. Attendees will have the chance to purchase custom DENA STRONG t-shirts and John Muir Alumni Car Magnets, with all proceeds going to the John Muir High School Alumni Relief Fund. The funds will support alumni who lost their homes and belongings in the fire. Donations to the cause are also welcome, with a dedicated link available for contributions.
For alumni who lost yearbooks in the fire, replacement copies will be available for free for select years, while other years can be provided digitally. If you’re a John Muir alumnus and wish to receive a replacement, requests can be made in advance.
The screening will also offer a chance for alumni to reconnect with one another and the larger Muir community, with the added opportunity to learn more about the history of Altadena and the legacy of Owen Brown. Additionally, an exhibit will be created in the John Muir Alumni Museum at this year’s homecoming, commemorating the alumni who were affected by the fire.
