Open Fist Theatre Revives “Bat Boy: The Musical

Open Fist Theatre Company is bringing the thrilling rock horror musical Bat Boy: The Musical to the Atwater Village Theatre for a six-week run from March 1 through April 6.

      By News Desk

Directed by Pat Towne, with musical direction by Sean Paxton and choreography by Jennifer Maples, this electrifying show features a book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming and music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe. Before the official run, there will be three pay-what-you-will preview performances on February 22, 23, and 28, where tickets start as low as $10.

Inspired by a bizarre 1992 supermarket tabloid story, Bat Boy: The Musical follows the unsettling tale of a half-boy, half-bat creature discovered in a West Virginia cave. Now, in a twist of fate, the Bat Boy (played by Ben Raanan) has been “rediscovered,” making his new home in a cave-like theater in Atwater Village.

Joining Raanan in the ensemble cast are Sandra Kate Burck, Isaac Council, Hutchins Foster, Carmella Jenkins, Bethany Koulias, Michael Lanahan, Rebecca Larsen, Amir Levi, Scott Mosensen, Ethan Remez-Cott, Ziare Rene, Beth Robbins, Chima Rok, Robyn Roth, and Grace Soens. The creative team includes scenic designer Brad Bentz, lighting designer Brandon Baruch, sound designer Christopher Moscatiello and mixer Alex Hix, costume designer Michael Mullen, and graphic designer D Morris. Amanda Weier and Christian Lebano co-produce, with John Dimitri serving as production stage manager.

Open Fist Theatre Company is a collective, self-producing entity led by artistic director Martha Demson. The company fosters an open spirit, embracing people and ideas, while also embodying determination to remain a vital voice for social change through theater.

Bat Boy: The Musical will run from March 1 through April 6, with previews starting February 22. Tickets range from $26 to $45, with previews available for a pay-what-you-will price starting at $10. Performances vary, so be sure to check the schedule. The Atwater Village Theatre is located at 3269 Casitas Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90039. Free parking is available in the ATX (Atwater Crossing) lot, just one block south of the theater.

For tickets or more information, call (323) 882-6912 or visit openfist.org.
