An art event in Old Pasadena will takeover the district and showcase selected, site-specific, temporary art installations.

      By News Desk

This one-day art event, titled BoldPas: An Art Takeover of Old Pasadena, will also include a handful of Old Pasadena merchants participating with their own “art stops.” The event will highlight the district’s unique urban and historic spaces while encouraging visitors to experience the space, history, and character of the 22-block district.

Artists, established and up-and-coming ones, were chosen from multidisciplinary backgrounds and professions that include architecture, art and design, history, and urban planning. They are all based in the greater Los Angeles area.

      Bold but short takeover

Selected installations feature a “bold” theme, displaying bright colors, surprising scale, and playfulness. Artists have incorporated common, everyday found and lightweight materials to emphasize the temporary nature of the artworks while some referenced the distinct history of Pasadena. Many of the pieces are interactive, encouraging hands-on engagement with viewers.

Sadly, the installations will be in place for one day only. Pasadenans, and out of town visitors, are invited to spend the day in Old Pasadena, meandering the historic alleyways and side streets, taking in the unique and ephemeral intersection of design, architecture, art, history, and public space.

The inaugural BoldPas: An Art Takeover of Old Pasadena is scheduled for Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. BoldPas is the brainchild of the Old Pasadena Management District (OPMD).

      Selected Artists

      Abbey Luck
      “The Rainbow Gates”
Recyclable and brightly colored large streamers strung across an urban alleyway to create seven inverse rainbows.

      Anali Gharakhani
      “Blister”
Seven compressed and nesting cardboard spheres that can be rearranged for visitors to sit and lounge.

      Arty Vartanyan & Zenah Sakaamini
      “Vantage Obscura”
Six 8-foot cubes of simple yarn and translucent colored film woven throughout a wooden framework where the viewer walks around and inside of the art work.

      Ash Cano
      “Rose Garden”
A garden of six-foot roses crafted from painted pipes, cardboard, and fabric that can be “plucked” and serve as a photographic prop.

      Asli Tusavul
      “Better as a Color”
Comprises thousands of straws sewn together and strung in rows across a 50-foot pre-fabricated steel frame. http://www.aslitusavul.com

      L.L. Kessner
      “Micro/Macro Waves”
This tissue paper “tapestry” will call to mind a hanging sea of brightly colored blue waves and the pattern of microwave radiation. http://www.llkessner.com

      Paul Heintz
      “Colorful Cacti”
200 brightly colored papier-mache cacti, some of them standing upwards of seven feet tall, bringing a showy garden to an urban alley. http://www.localstudiola.com

      Po Yang Leung
      “Walking the Pets”
A whimsical papier-mache installation of “pets” ranging in size from 18” to 36” tall – a size meant to encourage interaction with visitors. http://www.poyanleung.com

      Sarah Umles
      “Crystal Lucida”
An installation that encourages visitors to paint the reflections and colorful shadows created on a white table surface when light is refracted through 100 cut-glass containers filled with colored water.

      Viviana Palacio
      “Displacement of Working Objects”
Evoking Pasadena’s past as a citrus grove capital, the installation places together found wooden orchard ladders formerly used for fruit picking.

      > There will be two walking tours hosted by Pasadena Walking Tours allowing registered participants to explore installations up close, meet the artists, and learn more about Old Pasadena’s permanent public art. Photography and social sharing are encouraged by using the hashtags #BoldPas and #OnlyinOldPas.
