Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) confirmed on Thursday, January 16, that a stomach bug is circulating among people at the Pasadena shelter located at the Pasadena Convention Center.

The Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) is providing guidance and support to the American Red Cross shelter operations to respond to the Norovirus outbreak. The spread of illness in congregate living situations, including shelters, is unfortunately common given the close quarters and communal spaces. This year, the community has experienced higher than normal levels of Norovirus.
A press release stated:
The health and safety of residents at the Pasadena Evacuation Shelter is our highest priority. This morning, the Pasadena Public Health Department confirmed three cases tested positive for Norovirus, among a cluster of 28 people with acute gastrointestinal illness. We will continue to support American Red Cross’ efforts to address the Norovirus outbreak. Since the city transitioned operation of the Evacuation Shelter to the American Red Cross on Saturday, January 10, Pasadena Public Health Department has worked closely with the American Red Cross to deploy infection prevention and control measures.”
PPHD is advising and supporting the American Red Cross and onsite medical teams from Kaiser Permanente and AltaMed to ensure anyone experiencing illness is isolated immediately and provided appropriate medical attention. Additional control measures including handwashing stations, frequent restroom cleaning, and use of disinfectants strong enough to kill Norovirus have been deployed. The PPHD team will continue to meet with onsite health services partners and monitor the situation to prevent any further spread.
Norovirus symptoms
Norovirus causes acute vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps:
- While most people with Norovirus get better within one to three days, the virus can make a person feel extremely ill with vomiting and diarrhea many times a day. This can lead to dehydration, especially in young children, older adults, and people with other illnesses.
- Symptoms of dehydration include decreased urination, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing up. Young children who are dehydrated may cry with few or no tears and be unusually sleepy or fussy. It is important that children with Norovirus stay well-hydrated.
