MORE: > Altadena Aldi Opens April 6, 2017
For the longest time that I’ve shopped in Altadena I wanted a Trader Joe’s store in the neighborhood. Well, we got close.

Aldi, which is owned by the same German media-shy Albrecht family that owns Trader Joe’s, apparently is coming to Altadena.
The company’s philosophy is to offer deep discounted prices on quality items while cutting overhead.
Jason Hart, Aldi’s CEO, says:
From the moment new customers walk through our doors, they know that, at ALDI, they are about to embark on a new shopping experience. When shoppers taste the fresh, quality foods at ALDI, and learn how our small differences directly impact their big savings at the register, they quickly become loyal shoppers. And, they tell their friends and family, which is the best endorsement we could receive.
Aldi will be a valuable shopping experience if you’re not brand conscious. The hard-discount grocer will offer:
- Low prices on Produce.
- Low price (with attractive designs) on their own private label brand.
- You must insert a quarter to get a cart. You get your money back when you return it.
- Bring your own bag(s).
Wages and benefits
By keeping staffing and overhead low, each store will need close to 20 employees. ALDI will offer starting wages of $13 per hour for store associates, with an opportunity for long-standing associates to earn up to $21 per hour, in Southern California.
Store employees will average 33-40 hours each week and will be eligible for full benefits, including health insurance, dental coverage and the opportunity to participate in the company’s 401(k) program with matching contributions, according to the company’s press release.
Consumer options
With the recent merger of Safeway (operates under Vons and Pavilions) and Albertsons, Aldi comes in as a fresh and direct competition in the grocery store market.
Whether you’re a price conscious shopper or an affluent customer who enjoys a good bargain, Aldi should be on your radar once it opens on 2246 Lake Ave, in Altadena.
Aldi plans on opening their Southern California Stores in March 2016. It has set the goal of opening around 600 new stores around the country by 2018.

How to apply for work at the soon to open Aldi’s in Altadena. My daughter a all her life resident of Altadena needs a job
I sure hope ALDI does come to the Pasadena/Altadena area. I LOVE this store!! Something’s up though….the construction site on North Lake Ave has been at a stand-still for a looong time now….does anyone know what the hold up is??
it’s usually a money issue. I’m skeptical but hopeful at the same time that this market will open soon and remain open.
I couldn’t agree more with Lorren. I hope this rumor is false.
I have shopped at Aldi stores all over Northern Europe and – though their approach is different from that of the markets we are used to (bag you own, return the cart) there is no difference in the products themselves – just a much more limited selection. I am thrilled to have them come in but sure would like to see more progress on the building itself. It is VERY slowly moving forward – I doubt that the March opening is still going to happen.
I have seen several sites suggesting that ALDI is coming to Altadena…what a horrible idea. I will continue to drive into Pasadena to do my grocery shopping. The fact that Altadena has no store with a Delior butcher counter or even a bakery is just crazy. Whoever is getting paid to decide what comes into Altadena needs to be fired. I mean we don’t even have a Starbucks. They are trying to upscale this place but then end up taking 10 steps back when they allow stores like ALDI to come into Altadena.
Do you have proof this will be an ALDI? What proof? We are interested to know because we have spent all day trying to get an on-the-record verification from a stakeholder in the property and cannot obtain verification.
