Muir’s historic season ended on December 10, with a loss in the CIF 5-AA state championship game to Hughson HS at the victor’s soggy field outside of Modesto.
By Scott Phelps
It was raining heavily and was a chilly 50 degrees F at kickoff, making for very difficult playing conditions. Muir fell behind early as they fumbled on their first possession and Hughson quickly converted that into a TD. Near the end of the first quarter Muir gave up a safety to make the score 9-0 Hughson.
Miscues and turnovers by both sides under the difficult conditions made for a scoreless second quarter so it remained 9-0 at the half. Late in the third quarter Muir recovered a Hughson fumble near Hughson’s goal line and quickly converted it into a TD. The two-point conversion failed, however, making the score 9-6 Hughson.
Neither side could make much progress in the 4th quarter and so the game ended in a 9-6 Hughson victory.
Congratulations to Pasadena’s John Muir High School team, coaches, parents and boosters, supporters . . . on a fabulous season! Thank you for your dedication, discipline, leadership and effort Mustangs! You have gone the furthest of any Muir team in history! CIF Division 5-AA Regional Champions!
