In a news release published on Monday, June 9, city officials emphasized that the Monterey Park Police Department does not participate in federal immigration enforcement activities and will continue to focus on building trust within the community.
In alignment with the California Values Act (Senate Bill 54), Monterey Park City Council Resolution 2024-R96, and internal Department Policy 413, the Monterey Park Police Department (MPPD) has outlined clear boundaries between local policing and federal immigration responsibilities.
According to the statement:
- Officers do not question individuals about their immigration status.
- The city does not hold federal detainees in its jail facilities.
- Local police do not assist in federal immigration enforcement operations.
“Immigration enforcement is the responsibility of federal agencies—not the Monterey Park Police Department,” the city emphasized. “Ensuring public safety depends on trust and cooperation, and that starts with making every resident feel safe when contacting police, regardless of their background or status.”
Officials stressed that the city’s priority is to deliver effective municipal services to all who live in Monterey Park, highlighting the essential contributions immigrants make to the community.
“The City of Monterey Park recognizes the humanity of all individuals who call our community home,” the statement read. “We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and respected.”
Residents are encouraged to contact MPPD if they are victims of a crime, witnesses, or in need of assistance, without fear of their immigration status being questioned.
