At Wednesday night’s Monrovia Unified School District Board of Education meeting, trustees considered a recommendation to consolidate Santa Fe Computer Magnet School and Clifton Middle School. The item was brought forward for a vote following a presentation titled Middle School Consolidation Recommendation Presentation – January 21, 2026.

The consolidation proposal was first introduced at a public board meeting on Nov. 19, 2025, with an initial vote scheduled for Dec. 17, 2025. That vote was postponed, and the item returned to the board for consideration at the Jan. 21, 2026 meeting.
Prior to taking action on the recommendation, Board Vice President Selene Lockerbie introduced a motion to delay the vote and conduct further study of the consolidation. The motion passed by a 3–1 vote.
Under the approved motion, the superintendent is directed to convene a Consolidation Committee with diverse representation, including parents, students, educators, labor representatives, community members, representatives from the City of Monrovia government, and appropriate cabinet representation. The committee will meet regularly to review the previously presented middle school consolidation options, along with a broader range of additional consolidation scenarios. Its work will be facilitated by an independent expert consultancy.
The committee is required to return a formal recommendation no later than the penultimate regular board meeting at which the current board conducts business, or earlier if its work is completed, allowing the board to take final action at its last regular business meeting.
Additional information related to expenditure reductions, data, community input, and the consolidation process has been provided on the district’s School Consolidation Community Information page on the MUSD website.
The consolidation recommendation is tied to the district’s Fiscal Stabilization Plan, which was developed in response to expenditure reductions required by the Los Angeles County Office of Education in June 2024. With the board’s decision to delay action, the district will no longer meet the goals of the Fiscal Stabilization Plan and will consult with LACOE on how to proceed.
Based on the revised timeline established by the board’s directive, consolidation will not be able to occur before the start of the 2026–27 school year.
