GUEST OPINION
The Chinese American Political Action Committee (IAPAC ) held a press conference on Friday, October 18 in Rosemead to inform the San Gabriel Chinese Community about misinformation being spread by city council candidate George Herrera.

The officers of IPAC stated their concerns at the San Gabriel City Council meeting October 15, regarding an ad on a Chinese event poster where Herrera states in Chinese, that he is a ‘Current San Gabriel City Councilor.’ He is not, nor ever has been a city councilmember.
Another more serious issue was exposed recently regarding the official sample ballot sent out by L.A. County to all registered voters. San Gabriel City Clerk, Sharon Clark sent a letter to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office on October 17, informing them of Herrera’s misinformation.
As the Chief City Clerk for the City of San Gabriel, I’m sending this letter to advise your office that there is a public confusion regarding the translation of the Candidate Statement filed by Jorge Herrera Avila. At the time he submitted his papers to run of office, Mr. Herrera Avila requested a ballot designation of ‘Municipal Manager,’ representing the same as his job title for a local waste hauler. I denied his ballot designation on the grounds it might mislead the public (E.C.13107) and his second choice ‘Municipal Sales Manager’ was accepted.
However, the candidate statement in the ballot information still lists his job (from which he was recently ‘let go’) as ‘municipal manager’ without the word ‘sales’. The members of IAPAC informed the City Council and City Clerk, that when translated into Mandarin/Cantonese his title became ‘City Manager’.”
Herrara is not the City Manager of San Gabriel. Mark Lazzaretto is the City Manager.
“I have subsequently been informed that this error may have been repeated in some other translations,” Clark stated.
Herrera is deceiving the people of the Chinese Community. He has done it repeatedly and purposefully. He intentionally targeted the Chinese community, hoping that many of our Chinese residents aren’t aware of who the City Officials are. He was also hoping that those of us who don’t speak Chinese, Mandrin or Cantonese, would discover his deception, but thanks to the members of IAPAC, it was disclosed.
Jorge Herrera or George E. Herrera or Jorge Herrera Avila, depending on what documents or posting you read, does not deserve a seat on the San Gabriel City Council. His campaign is being run on lies and deception.

Met him once at a volunteering event. He just took photos the entire time and wasn’t much help. Just doesn’t seem genuine.
Why doesn’t Cheri Cabot add a disclaimer that she has publicly campaigned and endorsed for Tony Ding and Carina Rivera? This is a hit piece on a candidate she was never supporting to begin with. The bias is overwhelming and clear. Yet there’s no articles about how City Councilmember Denise Menchaca is using city resources to promote Carina.
10000000% agree. It’s amazing that Cabot and Menchaca think we are too stupid to see through this. Pathetic.
This news does not surprise me in the least. This guy is bad news. I am a San Gabriel resident and I have met him and talked to him. I hope the paper stays on this story and covers what other underhanded tricks he’s up to.
