– Second Chance Month
In April 2024, the L.A. Justice, Care and Opportunities Department, in collaboration with community-based service providers, will be hosting a series of community resource events. The events will feature services and resources that link the community to care management, workforce opportunities, education, legal resources, housing, and other supportive services.
– Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The Board of Supervisors will bring attention to County adult and juvenile facilities’ compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). The month of April uplifts an annual campaign to bring awareness to sexual assault and violence. This year’s theme is “Building Connected Communities” – a campaign focused on how we engage with victims and survivors of sexual violence and ensure that we continue to believe and stand with them in their journey to healing and justice.
– Fee waiver
Waive the Medical Examiner’s fee of $400 for transportation and storage of bodies during the six-month assessment and evaluation period.
The Medical Examiner’s analysis showed that between Fiscal Year 2016-17 and Fiscal Year 2021-2022, their ability to collect bills has been between 56% and 63%, indicating the financial hardships experienced by the families they serve.
– Establish an interim transportation plan for people who are incarcerated
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) transports more than 1,500 incarcerated individuals a day, to and from court, medical appointments, jails, and state prisons. Since 2018, LASD has not received any new buses, resulting in 23 out of 82 buses that are operable – less than half of what LASD needs to fulfill its transportation duties and responsibilities. It also costs between $1.2-$1.6 million annually to maintain the aging buses.
According to the Los Angeles Superior Court’s Criminal Division (Court), at one point, 33% of all who needed to appear in court were unable to do so due to a lack of working and functioning buses. The Court also noted that some of the individuals could have been released the day they appeared in court or shortly thereafter – a missed opportunity.
– Vietnam War Veterans Day
Proclaim March 29, 2024 as “Vietnam War Veterans Day” in Los Angeles County. The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, signed into law in 2017, designates every March 29 as “National Vietnam War Veterans Day.” This day was selected because it marks the day the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam soil in 1973.
