Broadcast Details
– Sunday, March 9 – Jaime Martín’s First Concert with LACO
This broadcast features the historic first performance by Jaime Martín with LACO, which kicked off the orchestra’s 50th anniversary season and put Martín firmly on the radar as a potential future Music Director. The program includes Mozart’s overture from The Abduction from the Seraglio, Bernstein’s Serenade (after Plato’s Symposium) with the brilliant violinist Joshua Bell, and Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 in D major, Op. 11, known for its rich horn section. Martín’s appointment as LACO Music Director was announced just four and a half months after this inaugural performance. (Recorded October 1, 2017.)
– Sunday, March 16 – Jaime Martín’s Debut as Music Director
This broadcast features Martín’s first performance as LACO’s Music Director, a momentous occasion in the orchestra’s history. The program opens with the world premiere of Begin, a LACO commission by former Composer-in-Residence Andrew Norman. It also includes Berlioz’ Les nuits d’été featuring acclaimed mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and Beethoven’s exuberant Symphony No. 7. The performance concludes with two delightful encores: Once Upon a Summertime by Michel Legrand and Elle tourney la Terre by Léo Ferré. (Recorded September 29, 2019.)
– Sunday, March 23 – LACO’s Return to Walt Disney Concert Hall Post-Pandemic
This broadcast captures the historic moment when LACO returned to Walt Disney Concert Hall after a long pandemic hiatus. Part of LACO’s SummerFest series, the concert includes Alberto Ginastera’s Variaciones concertantes, which celebrates Argentina’s folkloric rhythms, and Juan Pablo Contreras’ Mariachitlán, an orchestral homage to the mariachi traditions of Jalisco, Mexico. The program also features Mendelssohn’s vibrant Symphony No. 4 in A major, “Italian” and an encore of Gimenez’ Intermedio de la boda de Luis Alonso, a medley of lively Spanish dances. This concert was made possible by a leadership gift from Terri + Jerry Kohl. (Recorded June 26, 2021.)
– Sunday, March 30 – Five Years Under Jaime Martín’s Leadership
The final broadcast in the series marks the fifth anniversary of Jaime Martín’s tenure with LACO, featuring a program recorded last season. Martín leads the orchestra in selections from Bach’s Easter Oratorio and Stabat Mater, as well as Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, a sublime reflection on redemption, with special guests Amanda Forsythe, a Grammy Award-winning soprano, and John Holiday, a countertenor and The Voice finalist. The performance culminates with Mozart’s iconic Symphony No. 40 in G minor. The program was made possible by the generous support of Cheryl K. Petersen + Roger H. Lustberg and commemorates the centenary of Sir Neville Marriner, LACO’s first Music Director. (Recorded March 31, 2024.)
