GUEST EDITORIAL
The hashtag #GivingTuesday was created to encourage giving as a “global generosity movement” and it has grown tremendously since December 2012 when it began.

The organization, GivingTuesday, announced that an additional “Tuesday” would be added to their 2020 calendar in order to help others during the Covid-19 crisis.
On May 5 (tomorrow) they are promoting #GivingTuesdayNow (The previous scheduled #GivingTuesday is still slated for December 1, 2020.)
#GivingTuesdayNow, according to their website, is a “global day of action.” Kathleen Murphy, the Director of Digital Strategy for #GivingTuesday said “We believe these times call for generosity more than ever; and generosity of all types. From helping a neighbor get their groceries to celebrating healthcare workers, to donating to nonprofits, every act of giving counts.”
Last year #GivingTuesday raised over $two billion dollars in the United States alone.
That’s impressive and I’m participating tomorrow by donating to the Pasadena Unified School District. California public schools simply do not have enough money. I want to help change this situation.
The Pasadena Unified School District amazes me. They closed the schools on a Friday in March and by that following Monday adults could drive up to schools and receive the Grab ‘n Go lunches for their children provided by the district. PUSD has now delivered over 100,000 lunches to students and they are still going strong. In addition, the volunteers from the community who help distribute the lunches have reignited my faith in the goodness of others.
I am troubled by the times we find ourselves in, yet my fears are often quelled when I participate in my local public school. I believe in our public schools because they are a fundamental cornerstone to our democracy. They are the place where children experience daily the breadth of American culture.
#GivingTuesdayNow inspires me to give, give and give some more to the community around me.
