Sheriff Robert G. Luna emphasized that immigration enforcement falls under the jurisdiction of federal agencies, not local law enforcement. “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department does not engage in mass deportation sweeps, nor do we enforce civil immigration laws,” Luna said. “We do not inquire about an individual’s immigration status when responding to calls for service.”
The statement was made following growing concerns within local communities, particularly among immigrant populations, about the potential involvement of the LASD in recent immigration actions. Sheriff Luna made it clear that while the department remains committed to maintaining public safety, its primary role is enforcing state and local laws, ensuring the well-being of all residents, regardless of legal status.
“We are committed to diversity, inclusion, and public trust. Our focus is on keeping our communities safe, and we want to make it clear that the LASD is here to protect everyone who lives in or visits Los Angeles County,” Luna said. “When you call us for help, we will respond, investigate, and protect you, no matter what your immigration status may be.”
In light of recent reports, Sheriff Luna also acknowledged the anxiety and fear that these developments have caused within immigrant communities. “We understand the concerns and emotions that these reports have raised, and we urge everyone to remain calm,” he urged. “Your safety is our priority, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone feels secure in their homes, their neighborhoods, and their daily lives.”
The LASD has reiterated that it continues to uphold the values of safety, service, and respect for all individuals, with the aim of fostering trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the diverse communities it serves.
For residents who feel uncertain or frightened about recent immigration enforcement activity, the Sheriff’s Department encouraged open communication and assured them that they could continue to rely on the LASD for protection and assistance.
