This will be John Wu’s first term as Mayor since his appointment to the San Gabriel City Council in February 2022 and getting elected to City Council in November 2022. As a long-standing San Gabriel resident for over two decades, and a real estate industry figure, Mayor Wu brings a wealth of experience and dedication to community progress.
Of the appointment, Wu said:
It is truly an honor to have the council’s support and to serve as the Mayor of San Gabriel. During my tenure as a council member and Vice Mayor, I have been committed to enhancing public safety and infrastructure and fostering a business-friendly environment.
As the new Mayor, I am dedicated to implementing the traffic improvement plan, establishing midterm and long-term strategies for enhancing our public safety facilities, and developing a feasible housing plan, all while balancing city development efforts to ensure a sustainable future for all residents.”
Denise Menchaca was first elected in March 2017. She was the first Latina Mayor of the City of San Gabriel amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Vice Mayor Menchaca’s priorities include preserving the city’s history, ensuring public safety, providing diverse services for residents (especially youth and seniors), improving infrastructure, and responsibly managing local tax dollars.
The official swearing-in ceremony for the new Mayor and Vice Mayor is scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at 6:30 pm during the upcoming City Council meeting. The meeting is open to the public, and the community is invited to attend the ceremony at the Council Chambers to celebrate this momentous occasion.
San Gabriel City Council members are elected at large to serve four-year terms. The Mayor is appointed annually by the Council in a rotation among its members.
