Pasadena Planning Commission Vice Chair Jason Lyon announced this week that he will seek election to the District 7 seat on the Pasadena City Council. Vice Mayor Andy Wilson, who currently represents District 7, has said he plans to step down at the end of this term.

      By News Desk

The official nominating period for the election will begin in late February 2022. Lyon’s campaign continues to monitor the ongoing COVID surge and will hold a formal “campaign kickoff” event when health officials advise that larger groups can safely meet again. In the meantime, Lyon is meeting with small gatherings of residents and individuals to discuss their hopes and concerns for the city.

      District 7

Council District 7, home to Pasadena’s most celebrated institutions, including the Pasadena Playhouse, the Langham Hotel, Pasadena Community College, and Caltech, is generally bounded by Colorado and Del Mar to the north; the city limits to the south; Arroyo Parkway, Madison, and Los Robles to the west; and Allen and Roosevelt to the east. Because Pasadena is currently in the process of redistricting, the district’s boundaries may change.

      Jason Lyon

Lyon grew up in North Carolina and moved to Los Angeles in 1998. According to his campaign website, he co-founded a non-profit the age of 14 and served on his first Board of Directors at 16. Since moving to Pasadena in 2010, he has remained committed to community service, serving on the boards of directors of several non-profits and commissions. In 2014, Lyon was elected to the board of Young & Healthy, a nonprofit dedicated to providing Pasadena’s uninsured and underserved children with access to high-quality health care at no cost to their families. He also served on the governing board of All Saints Church and became its senior lay leader in 2016, overseeing the transition from legendary rector Ed Bacon to successor Mike Kinman. Most recently, Lyon held a seat on the board of the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership, which seeks to advance the economic vitality and quality of life in our region.

Lyon wrote in a letter to supporters:

I’m running for the council because I love this city. I want it to be not just the wonderful place it is but all the amazing things it can be. I’m running to make a city that is livable and affordable at all income levels; a city where no one is unhoused; a city that is environmentally and economically sustainable. I’m running to bring civility back to our public discourse. I truly believe that, together, we can achieve all of these things and more.

In 2017, Jason Lyon was appointed to Pasadena’s Historic Preservation Commission. He has been a member of Pasadena’s Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals since 2019.

When not volunteering his time, Commissioner Lyon works as an attorney. He began his career at Latham & Watkins in downtown Los Angeles. He joined Pasadena’s historic Hahn & Hahn, the 122-year-old law firm whose name graces the building beside City Hall, in 2017. As a partner in the commercial litigation group, Commissioner Lyon helps businesses to resolve complex disputes involving contracts, employment issues, fraud, and trade secret violations. He’s the first openly LGBTQ attorney in the firm’s history.

Lyon lives in the Madison Heights neighborhood with his husband, realtor Tim Hartley, and their two sons.

      Andy Wilson

Coucilman Andy Wilson is the executive director for The Alliance for Southern California Innovation. He was appointed to Pasadena City Council, District 7, in 2015.  He ran for election and won his seat in 2017.

He and his wife Liz can often be seen walking with their school-aged boys and rescue dog in Madison Heights, their home for 20 years.
