Investigators are focusing on an electrical transmission tower in Eaton Canyon as a possible cause of the Eaton fire, which has destroyed more than 7,000 structures and claimed five lives.

Early photos and videos from residents show flames near the base of the tower before the fire rapidly spread due to strong winds. Southern California Edison, the utility company that operates the tower, has denied its equipment was involved, stating their distribution lines immediately to the west of Eaton Canyon were de-energized well before the reported start time of the fire, as part of SCE’s Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program.
The footage captured by residents seems to contradict this claim. The fire, which burned over 14,000 acres, may take weeks or months to fully investigate. Legal action has been taken to preserve evidence, and if the fire was caused by Edison’s equipment, it could result in major financial impact for the company.
Experts are calling for more investigation to determine the role of Edison’s equipment in the blaze.
