ICE’s Deepening Contradiction: Violence Rewarded and Incentivized

ProPublica reporters Nicole Foy and McKenzie Funk recently uncovered a disturbing pattern within ICE: agents are increasingly using aggressive tactics, smashing car windows even when sobbing children or pregnant women are inside. Yet those responsible for such actions aren’t being disciplined. In many cases, they’re being promoted.

One chilling quote from their reporting captures the agency’s approach: “We’ll smash the fucking window out and drag him out.” It reflects the growing normalization of brute force during apprehensions.

At the same time, ICE is launching expansive recruitment incentives: new hires are being offered signing bonuses of up to $50,000, along with student loan repayment or forgiveness. These benefits are made possible by a staggering $170 billion funding boost for border and immigration enforcement in the Big Beautiful Bill signed into law by President T. on July 4, 2025.

Gestapo tactics

Together, these developments signal a deeply troubling shift in policy. Violent enforcement is not just tolerated, it is rewarded. Agents who engage in aggressive conduct face no repercussions, and they may even interpret the silence as endorsement. Meanwhile, the federal government is pouring resources into hiring more officers, despite mounting concerns about oversight and accountability.

A moral crisis

This is more than a policy failure; it is a moral crisis. A society that funds brutality and incentivizes recruitment into a system where violence goes unchecked undermines public trust in law enforcement and degrades human dignity. As ICE expands, the risk is that a  punitive, fear-driven system will be entrench, rather than a system rooted in ethics and justice.
