The Rose Parade, one of the most iconic New Year’s traditions, has long symbolized Pasadena’s festive spirit with its vibrant floats and grand displays. However, behind the spectacle, there’s an unexpected twist that has become part of the Parade’s legacy: rain.

According to archivists, the Rose Parade has been affected by rain on 10 occasions throughout its history, spanning over a century of celebrations. If the forecast calls for showers in 2026, it will mark the 11th time rain has dampened the event.
A Century of Rain
The earliest recorded rainfall during the Rose Parade occurred in 1895, when the entire week leading up to the event, and the Parade itself, was drenched. This marked the beginning of a long tradition of weather-related challenges, but the Rose Parade has never been one to let a little rain spoil the fun.
In 1899, rain forced organizers to delay the Parade until 3:45 pm. A decade later, in 1910, rain caused a noon postponement, with the famous chariot races also pushed back by a week. These early disruptions were minor compared to what happened in 1934, when 12 inches of rain poured down on Pasadena within just 48 hours leading up to the Parade. In a dramatic twist, the Grand Marshal of that year’s event, Admiral William Sims, nearly missed the festivities due to the severe weather. The Admiral had been staying aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania, and violent storms delayed his departure.
The stormy weather didn’t stop there. In 1937, a heavy rainstorm struck the night before the Parade, causing significant damage to decorating tents. Despite the setbacks, volunteers worked tirelessly to complete the float preparations, and the Parade went on as scheduled, showcasing the resilience of those behind the scenes.
Show Must Go On
The 1955 Rose Parade is another example of how Pasadena refuses to let rain derail the celebrations. Even though it rained on New Year’s Day, the Parade stepped off on time, proving that a little water wouldn’t wash away tradition.
In 2006, Pasadena experienced yet another drenching during the Parade. Despite the heavy rain, the event proceeded without delay, showcasing the enduring spirit of the Tournament of Roses and its participants.
What’s Next for 2026?
With rain possibly in the forecast for 2026, the Rose Parade may be on track to join the ranks of history-making rainstorms. Whether it’s a light drizzle or a torrential downpour, Pasadena’s Rose Parade organizers are ready to carry on the tradition, rain or shine.
As the city prepares for another year of floats, bands, and celebrations, one thing is clear: nothing, least of all the weather, can take away the magic of the Rose Parade.
