The two boards, city and school, discussed state bills including AB 2295, in light of PUSD’s recent approval to begin a staff housing project at the former Roosevelt Elementary School site.
The Pasadena school district sees that affordable housing options are important to attract talented educators and staff to the district. The report stated that such housing would encourage long-term stays, which would reduce staff turnover. PUSD staff estimated that the first steps for the project would cost between $550,000 and $2,068,000. They indicated that there were funds available in the Measure O facilities bond proceeds.
The City Council and PUSD Board also discussed the development of more Career Technical Education (CTE) opportunities for students.
PUSD Trustee Jennifer Hall Lee said “The joint meeting is always beneficial for the district, and tonight’s meeting covered important topics for our students and staff. Workforce housing and Career Technical Education are essential for the 21st century. I’m happy to support workforce housing and to be a part of the mayor’s committee for vocational education.”
Kim Kenne, President of PUSD Board said: “The joint meeting between the PUSD School Board and the Pasadena City Council last night was a great opportunity to reinforce the collaborative relationship between our two bodies. I’m glad we were able to highlight areas where we are working together for the benefit of PUSD students and residents of Pasadena.”
