Here’s how to sustainably recycle your holiday tree and string lights.
By News Desk
Follow these simple steps January 2 to January 17.
Holiday Trees
- Remove all ornaments, tinsel, lights, and the stand.
- Place curbside on your trash day.
- Athens will recycle your tree and turn it into mulch.
> Flocked and artificial trees are considered trash. Please schedule a bulky item pick-up for these items.
String Lights
Holiday string lights are classified as “tanglers,” non-recyclable items that can disrupt the recycling process. When tossed in recycling bins, they wrap around the sorting machinery, causing jams and forcing the entire system to shut down. To avoid this, be sure to take string lights and electrical cords to a nearby disposal center for proper disposal.
