Toilet paper tree (Photo - sitondesign.com).First of all, being greenest doesn’t mean it’s the softest! Now that we got that out of the way, here’s the greenest toilet paper listing for 2015.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) ranked toilet tissue brands based on percentage of recycled paper used in the products and those processed without harmful chlorine. Here some of the findings of their ratings.

      • Some of the top green brands that made the list are Earth Essentials (CVS), Seventh Generation, Green Forest, Trader Joe’s, and 365 (Whole Foods).
      • Other products that partially meet the criteria for a rating of Green (or may meet these criteria but NRDC could not confirm the environmental attributes of these products) are Scott Naturals (Kimberly-Clark )and Soft ’N Gentle (Georgia-Pacific*).
      • At the bottom of the list, are toilet tissues that either contain zero recycled content or whose manufacturers did not respond to questions about recycling content or bleaching processes.  Some of those brands are Quilted Northern, Charmin, and the house brands of Safeway, Target, and Walmart.

*Georgia-Pacific is owned by the Koch brothers.

      Here’s the comprehensive listing:
