Last Independence Day, July 4, 2020, L.A. County was in a completely different place with an average of 2,000 new daily cases and 1900 people hospitalized with COVID-19 illness. This fourth of July, the County was in a much better place with significantly lower rates of transmission.

While the tools to prevent transmission, hospitalizations and deaths are effective and powerful, the rise in COVID-19 variants, and in particular, the Delta variant, are fueling a rapid increase in new cases, primarily among those not yet vaccinated. The Delta variant appears to be more contagious and may cause more severe infections than other COVID variants. With 4 million unvaccinated residents in L.A. County and a tripling of cases over the past week, there is enough risk for the Delta variant to pose a significant threat.
Face masks
While emerging data affirms that fully vaccinated people are well protected from severe infections with Delta variants, people with only one vaccine are not as well protected, and there is increasing evidence that a very small number of fully vaccinated individuals can become infected and may be able to infect others. L.A. County Health Department emphasizes to continue wearing face coverings when indoors with individuals who are not vaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown. This action adds a prudent layer of additional protection against the virus as masking up can help prevent a resurgence in transmission.
