In a farewell message addressed to students, parents, and employees, Yantz expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead the district and reflected on a legacy of progress rooted in a shared vision: to prepare students intellectually, emotionally, and socially for a rapidly changing world.
Under Yantz’s leadership, SPUSD expanded academic offerings across key disciplines, including engineering, biomedical science, computer science, the arts, and business. The district’s Dual Language Immersion programs in Spanish and Mandarin—spanning kindergarten through eighth grade—now offer middle schoolers the chance to earn college credit, highlighting a commitment to multilingualism and early academic acceleration.
A major highlight of his tenure was the successful passage and implementation of a $98 million bond measure. The investment led to the modernization of classrooms, the creation of cutting-edge labs and arts facilities, upgrades to athletic complexes, improved campus security, and the installation of sustainable energy systems like solar panels and LED lighting across all schools.
Yantz also prioritized student mental health and wellness, introducing initiatives such as the “Train Your Brain” program and expanding counseling services. According to the latest California Healthy Kids Survey, SPUSD students now report feeling significantly safer and more connected to school—surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
Nutrition services experienced similar growth, with daily school meal distribution doubling over the past five years. Today, nearly 60% of students participate in the program, reflecting a broader commitment to health and equity.
The superintendent credited the district’s success to robust community support, including contributions from local parcel taxes, PTAs, booster clubs, and the South Pasadena Educational Foundation.
The results of this collective effort are evident: four National Blue Ribbon Schools, five California Distinguished Schools, consistent top rankings in state and national reports, and a banner year for athletics with 21 of 22 teams qualifying for CIF playoffs and multiple state championships.
As he steps down, Yantz praised the district’s educators and staff as “the heart and soul” of SPUSD, calling them key to making the district a “destination” for families seeking excellence in education.
The first day of the 2025–2026 school year will be Wednesday, August 13. Dr. Angela Elizondo Baxter will take over as the next superintendent.
“YOU are SPUSD,” Yantz wrote in closing. “And I’m very proud to have served and led your schools.”
