Finances, Marijuana and a Prophet at Pasadena City Council

Budgetary discussions delayed Monday’s night meeting of the Pasadena City Council. Finance meetings had run since earlier in the day and Mark Jomsky, City Clerk, told the restive audience that he hoped the meeting would start, or resume, at seven.

He was off by a half-hour. At 7:30 a sighting of Steve Madison, District 7, was followed by the rest of the council. They had huddled in closed session, negotiations whose nature, Mayor Terry Tornek assured the crowd, were of a “complicated” nature and followed by the now-standard “no reportable action.”

Presentations for National Public Works Week and Gun Violence Awareness Day followed.

In open forum, the majority of the speakers lobbied in favor of keeping the Golden State Collective on Mentor Avenue open. The leadoff advocate was, indeed, a lawyer who gave a rating system to various narcotics, in terms of damage. Marijuana received a “one,” amphetamines a ten-plus, with alcohol a seven or so.

Others praised the drugs for countering the negative effects of military deployment, chemo treatment, and living with disabilities. One spoke of its help with his insomnia.

Tornek, with an agenda that had already gone on for hours, and promised to continue for many more—the council was scrutinizing the budgets for various departments—issued an almost boilerplate suggestion, “Please bring your comments to a close.”

Only one speaker in this segment had anything but the subject of the “pharmacy” at hand, and that was a self-described “apostle of Jesus Christ,” who, having “seen God on his throne,” spoke of the way he’d been 86’ed from various organizations and venues.

Finally, the investigation of the finances of the Pasadena Fire Department continued from earlier. The Police Department had already been questioned, and Human Resources was next on the docket. It promised to be a long evening, according to Mayor Tornek.
