In over 200 cities and towns across the nation, tens of thousands of Americans gathered on the Families First National Day of Action to call for a shift in congressional priorities. From Medicaid motorcades to back-to-school supply drives, the events sent a clear message to the Republican-led Congress: put families first, not billionaires.

As lawmakers take their August recess and head back to their districts, Americans made their voices heard, rallying against a series of controversial policies enacted under the Trump Administration and current Republican leadership. Protesters, including parents, grandparents, children, caregivers, immigrants, and faith leaders, turned out to demand action on issues that affect families across the country. Central to the protests were the defunding of healthcare for 17 million Americans, cuts to food assistance programs, and the continued funding of ICE, which separates families.
The event, organized by over 75 groups, was a call to action against policies that advocates say harm vulnerable communities. Groups such as the National Domestic Workers Alliance, SEIU, MoveOn, and Planned Parenthood joined forces for the National Day of Action, representing causes like labor, immigrant justice, racial equity, and caregiving.
The actions, which were centered around family-friendly and peaceful engagement, included food drives, art projects, teach-ins, and rallies. Participants not only protested but also came together to support one another, with many events aimed at providing tangible resources to underserved communities, such as back-to-school supplies for children and food for families in need.
In addition to the rallies, the Families First coalition also marked the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, hosting a livestream event on July 30 to reflect on these pivotal programs and launch a nationwide week of action. The week will feature town halls, community vigils, and rallies focused on preserving and expanding healthcare access for all Americans, especially as Congress faces continued pressure to cut social safety nets.
As the Families First movement grows, organizers pledge to maintain pressure on lawmakers throughout the August recess, ensuring the message remains loud and clear: It’s time for Congress to put families first.
